Phonetics of White Hmong vowel and tonal contrasts

چکیده
Hmong languages, particularly White Hmong, are well studied for their complex tone systems that incorporate pitch, phonation, and duration differences. Still, prior work has made use mostly of tones elicited in citation forms carrier phrases. In this paper, we provide a detailed description both the vowel from recordings read speech. We confirm several features language, including presence nasal vowels (rather than derived nasalized through coarticulation with coda [?]), certain contours, systematic breathy creaky voice on two tones. also find little evidence additional intonational f0 targets. However, show some vary greatly by position utterance, propose novel descriptions them. Finally, $\textrm{H}1^{\!*}$ –H2 * , widely used measure quality phonation across does not adequately distinguish modal non-modal data set, argue noise measures like Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPP) more robust to differences corpora variability.

Infants' Sensitivity to Vowel and Tonal Contrasts
Recently, evidence has been accumulating which indicates that infants from 1 to 5 months of age can discriminate speech or speechlike contrasts. It has been shown, for example, that infants can discriminate between synthetic samples of the voiced and voiceless stop consonants [b] and [p] (Eimas, Siqueland, Jusczyk, & Vigorito, 1971; Trehub & Rabinovitch, 1972), natural speech versions of [b] an...
متن کاملRegisters in Tonal Contrasts
This study revisits the issue of tonal registers by exploring the cues used in producing and perceiving the five level tones of Black Miao. Both production and perception experiments show that non-modal phonations are very important cues for tonal contrasts. Two different kinds of non-modal phonations that either enhance pitch contrasts or provide an additional contrastive cue divide tonal leve...
متن کاملBreathiness Contrasts in Consonants and Vowels: A Comparative Study of Gujarati and White Hmong
Only a small handful of languages are known to distinguish breathy and modal voice in both consonants and vowels. Two of these languages, Gujarati and White Hmong, boast CV sequences in which phonetic breathiness can be phonologically associated either with the consonant or with the vowel. Complicating matters, consonant breathiness is phonetically realized as a breathyvoiced aspirated release ...
متن کاملVowel Shifts and Phonology Phonetics Interface
1. I will be arguing from data on vowel shifts in progress, and from principles of language change, that language specific phonetic implementation rules must be part of speaker knowledge, and thus part of language acquisition. Then, I will sketch an abstract model of what phonetic implementation could be like. Having argued these points, I will address how this approach interacts with phonologi...
متن کاملHow Many Tonal Contrasts in Ikema Ryukyuan?
In this paper we will show that Ikema, a dialect of Miyako Ryukyuan, has a three-tone system, where three tonal classes, Types A, B, and C, are lexically distinguished, contra the previous studies which have claimed that it has a two-tone system. The results of our quantitative analysis of production data also revealed that Type A words are remarkably small in number, indicating that Type A wor...
